Denise Jones of Point of Grace: 30 Years of Faith, Friendship, and Music

As a longtime fan of 90s CCM, sitting down with Denise Jones from Point of Grace felt like a full-circle moment. We talked about the early days of the group, their incredible journey over the past three decades, and the legacy of their music. Denise’s stories are filled with faith, humor, and gratitude—just like Point of Grace’s songs. Here are the highlights of our conversation.

A Dorm Room Dream

It all started in a dorm room at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas. Denise, along with original members Shelley, Heather, and Terry, began singing together while in college.

Denise: “We were just talking one night about what we were going to do for the summer and thought, ‘Hey, let’s make a group!’ Wilson Phillips was big back then, so we were inspired by that vibe. We ran over to a practice room to see if we sounded good together, and that’s how it all started.”

Their harmonies, passion, and God’s faithfulness opened doors quickly. After winning a competition at a Christian music seminar in Estes Park, Colorado, they connected with Word Records. The rest is history.

From Small Churches to Big Stages

Point of Grace went from singing at camps and small churches to selling over 8 million records and performing on some of the biggest stages in Christian music.

Denise: “I’ll never forget our first Young Messiah Tour. I was on a bus with Sandy Patty, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Avalon—people I had admired for so long. It was surreal. Every night, I’d sit there and think, ‘I can’t believe this is happening.’”

Despite their success, Denise treasures the early days in the van and trailer, navigating with paper maps and calling cards. “Those were sweet, formative times that taught us so much about stewardship and teamwork.”

The Joy of Collaboration

Denise emphasized how much she values being part of a team.

Denise: “We could never have been solo artists. I love being with a team, knowing someone else can hold the torch when I need support. It’s like a marriage—you have to work through things with humility and respect.”

Even after decades of making music together, the bond between the members of Point of Grace remains strong. Denise credits their shared faith, upbringing, and sister-like dynamics for helping them navigate the ups and downs of ministry.

Adapting and Evolving

As a trio now, Point of Grace has had to rework their music over the years.

Denise: “When we transitioned from a quartet to a trio, we had to adjust harmonies and arrangements. Christmas music was especially challenging because of all the intricate parts. But we’ve loved the process of reinventing our songs while staying true to their essence.”

Their recent album, Turn Your Eyes, produced by Cindy Morgan, is a testament to their adaptability and continued passion for creating music that ministers to people.

Reflecting on the 90s

When asked if the 90s were the best era of CCM, Denise didn’t hesitate.

Denise: “Of course! It was such a special time. The music was fresh, and it created a community for believers to celebrate their faith together. Youth groups could go to concerts and hear music that sounded like what was on the radio, but with a message of hope and the Gospel.”

She reflected on how songs like Circle of Friends and Life, Love, and Other Mysteries resonated deeply with listeners and how their message continues to impact lives today.

A Legacy of Faithfulness

Looking back on 30 years of ministry, Denise is filled with gratitude.

Denise: “It’s all God’s faithfulness. To think we started as college girls in a dorm room and that He’s allowed us to keep doing this for so long—it’s humbling. We don’t take it for granted.”

Point of Grace continues to tour, record, and inspire new generations. Their latest record, Turn Your Eyes, is available now, and they’re already working on new projects for 2024.
